[Vwpickups] hard steering on vw gasser pickup

Hey Bob,
On my pickup, the rack and pinion were a slower ratio, making it more
difficult to park. In other words, I had to see-saw back and forth more to
park properly between the lines. I thought this was stupid, especially
considering how short our trucks are. I compared it to the GTI I had, and
it appears that the pickups have a different ratio in all of them (as long
as ETKA is correct). Therefore, one suggestion I might make is to find a
good rack off any other Rabbit, Jetta, or Scirocco to get this better rack.
Be sure to get one with intact boots, if the boots are torn, there is a good
chance the bearings that help support the rack are worn, and therefore you
will have slop in the mechanism. New racks can be had for about 125.00 from
parts4vws.com. You might also look at your tie-rods, and your bearings in
the column. If any of these are worn or low on grease, it might increase
effort.
Hope that helps,
David

hey fellows, this old gasser has an 80 vw pickup gasser and have
hard time with my shoulder and neck when parking or backing up my
pickup.....don't think there is anything major wrong with it other
than old age like me, but wonder if overhaul would make it easier
on these old bones. any suggestions appreciated. bob
