[Vwpickups] lower alternator bracket

Why the bracket broke is another question... Is it the right alternator bolt? Sometimes, a 5/16 bolt gets put in the pivot mount, instead of the correct metric one, and that causes looseness, vibration, and failure.

If all the parts are correct, its quite a sturdy setup. If that bolt is too small, and things get to shaking, anything and everything will shake to bits.

It would be a good idea to visit the self-serve wrecker and get all the correct, non-bent, non-modified parts.

Another potential problem is incorrect or excess tension on the alternator belt. The belt should be just tight enough that it almost squeals with all of the electrical loads engaged. If the belt is old, shiny, and glazed, one might tend to overtighten it to get it not to slip. Then, the $50 alternator or the $50 bracket fails, or the belt fails and boils over/melts the engine, all in the false economy of coaxing a few more miles out of a $5 belt.

All the best, Mathew Banack - 81 LX diesel
