[Vwpickups] Lost Battery light, seat belt light, glow plug light in dash 1982 diesel

I am a klutz when it comes to electrical wiring, and was trying to check to determine if a wire had power. The wire I was checking is gray with blue stripe, which is sourced from the headlight switch and provides power many light bulbs, including the instrument cluster. I could not detect power and early this morn, I received a flash, the gray with blue stripe should only be live WHEN the headlight switch is on. That is why I was fiddling with the wiring, all of which were working fine, with the exception of the wires that provide power to the radio. 
Next thing I know, I lost the indicator lights in the instrument cluster. When I turn on the hazard switch, the blinkers flash, but no indicator on dash. The starter still has power and the engine will start. I checked the four amp fuse  for the instrument cluster lights in the fuse block, it had blown. I replaced it, but no luck.
I will thoroughly check every fuse tomorrow. Any other suggestions? Any other fuses or switches involved with the above lights in the cluster?
